Nine major projects from Spain, Austria, Chile, Mexico and Brazil will take part today, on 17 October in Madrid, in the first edition of the Fundación MAPFRE Awards for Social Innovation.

These are 9 startups that stand out for their transformative potential, their social impact and their commitment to improving the world in areas such as health, mobility and the insurance sector as an industry involved in risk protection. In order to reach the final they have had to compete with around 500 projects and win their respective regional semifinals, which were held in Sao Paulo (for the Brazil region), Mexico City (for the rest of LATAM) and in Madrid for the European projects.

The finalists will have to defend their projects in front of a panel of judges who will choose the 3 best ones, namely those with the greatest potential for social impact. They will also assess the ability and experience of the teams in developing the idea and demonstrating with pilot tests or prototypes how the project could become a reality.

When the jury have reached their verdict, Fundación MAPFRE will award three prizes, the value of each will be up to 30,000 euros.

The ceremony will begin at 6.30 pm, in the Fundación Giner de los Ríos auditorium, on Calle General Martínez Campos, 14, Madrid. Taking part will be Ana Lima, Secretary of State for Social Services and Antonio Huertas, Chairman of MAPFRE.

The awards ceremony can be followed live and via streaming from 6.30pm: (in Spanish) and (in English).
